FORMER ironman legend Trevor Hendy will lead local and international paddlers at theRussell Island Paddle Challenge at Moreton Bay.

The event will be a major draw card for the Saltwater Festival, t be held on November 8th and 9th, and is expected to attract a large number of entries from the Gold Coast. The Russell Island Challenge will include traditional Aloha style categories, such as the growing class of Stand Up Paddle (SUP), traditional paddle boards, racing skis, one and two man outriggers.

There will be categories for under 19, open men and women and masters men and women competitors. Event organiser Mr Glen Thompson said Hendy and Big Wave surfer Matt Cook came up with the idea of the challenge.

Elite and recreational paddlers will compete for honors and the challenge will be for competitors to cross the finishing line first without mishaps, he said.

"This is the inaugural event an innovative new series which celebrates our love of the oceans and waterways" he said.

A marathon 18km event will be held on November 8 and sprint events on the following day will see the top ten placegetters in each category invited to compete in the Super Sprint Eliminator.

This will be the competition final and feature race, competitors will have to avoid elimination in four rapid 200m rounds and win a sprint to the finish, infront of the expected 3000 spectators.

'Apart from paddling, there will also be great local music, food, bar, games and activities to enjoy', said Mr.Thompson.

"There will be huge emphases on bringing people together and sharing new experiences in and out of the water".
